When installing kitchen furniture, many are interested in the question – which countertop to choose: from natural or artificial stone? Stone – the material most often used in the countertops installation, because it has a number of undeniable advantages. Strength, resistance to moisture, temperature extremes, fungus, fire safety – all these are the main qualities of a stone countertop. To date, there are two types of countertops available: natural and artificial stone. Natural materials include granite and marble, artificial – acrylic and quartz agglomerate. What is the difference? How they behave during regular operation? What are the disadvantages? These and other questions will be answered further in the article.
Perhaps you have already decided on the material for the countertops installation, but we recommend you to study their features carefully. Read the comparative characteristics of the artificial and natural stone.
Durability
Countertops made of artificial stone are stronger, which means they are more durable. Granite and marble tables are very heavy and fragile. They may crack under the influence of their own weight or spilled boiling water. The cracked granite countertops do not give you the ability to repair it, it’s necessary to install a new one. Joining is another problem of natural stone slabs. It’s practically impossible to restore them.
Resistance to temperature changes
Although the manufacturer indicates a good heat resistance of stone surfaces, we do not recommend taking any risks. Spilled boiling water can cause temperature shock, not to mention a hot pan. To avoid negative consequences, always use a pad under dishes.
Susceptibility to mechanical damage, scratches
If you want to ensure the countertop to serve for a long time, it is recommended to use a cutting board, which serves as a protection against cuts with a knife. Even on granite (the most scratch-resistant material), it is necessary to use the board to avoid damage from the blade of the knife.
Color
The artificial material has certain advantages over granite countertops installation material. Despite the unique natural shades of granite and marble, acrylic and quartz are more often preferred because of the variety of color solutions. Pink, lemon, red, blue, orange? No problem. You can choose any shade of acrylic, which fits perfectly into the interior of the kitchen.
Temperature
Quartz, granite and marble are cold materials. Acrylic is always warm to the touch, so it is ideal for use it in the kitchen.
Flexibility
Unlike granite and marble, acrylic is very plastic. It supports any form.
